First and foremost for those wondering, this is the new 2019 V2 at the time of writing this review. The late-2017 and 2018 batches had thick black paint for the finish, and it looked like a toy. This one is the late-2018, early-2019 batch with the new anodizing finish. I can tell because the old V2s have a serial number starting with "K," and the new V2s have a serial number starting with "W."
I was able to chrono this at 55°F with 0.30g BBs at around 330 FPS using green gas. That's around 1.5j, which is the same energy as 0.2g BBs at 400 FPS. HOWEVER, during the normal and warm California weather you can expect this to shoot at around 430 FPS with 0.20g BBs (around 1.7-2.1j) based on my experience with GHKs. At that point, that is way too hot for most fields. I've used green gas on my GHKs and filled them for 2-4 seconds at most. DO NOT fill for more than 4 seconds. Most people who have experience with GBBs fill it for around 15-20 seconds, but doing this to a GHK will cause misfeeds and can destroy the plastic hop up chamber.
Probably the best thing about GHK is that they sell replacement and upgrade parts through their factory retailer, Samoon. So far, GHK is the only major airsoft company I know of that allows customers to place orders for parts online without having to talk to a rep or having to send the darn thing in for weeks or months! That is huge pro for me there, as I've had to send my airsoft guns in for weeks just to get it repaired during the warranty period, or wait weeks for a part to arrive at a retailer and having to drive over and pick it up.
That being said, I do recommend ordering the following spare parts from Samoon, as GHKs aren't without their flaws. I consider these essential: Spare feed lips as hairline cracks can occur if the magazines are not loaded properly and can cause misfeeds, spare hop up chambers (or order a CNC aftermarket one) because misfeeds destroy the plastic chamber, and a 1J nozzle to reduce FPS to acceptable levels.
As for upgrades, the only thing you should do to improve performance is to get it rhopped. That's it. It takes AEG-spec inner barrels and buckings with the original hop up chamber. I had mine rhopped and lapped with a spare OEM barrel and bucking and it's a matter of point-and-shoot, which is crucial for a GBBR as you are severely handicapped with how many BBs you can hold.
When you ask people who are into GBBRs what is the absolute best plaform that is built to last, you'll get either the Tokyo Marui ZET System or the GHK System as the top two answers. Each has their pros and cons, with the TM being built for performance, while the GHK is more realistic. I won't go over in detail the pros and cons of each as there are plenty of resources out there for people to decide. For me, the GHK is something no one can ever go wrong with.
Pros:
- Anodizing finish.
- OEM parts readily available through Samoon.
- Licensed Colt trades.
- Comes with spare magazine baseplate with Colt trades.
- Nonexistent cooldown during cold weather.
- Takes AEG-spec inner barrels and buckings, so you can rhop it.
- Built to last.
Cons:
- Shoots too hot for most fields.
- Feed lips are easy to crack if not loaded properly.
- Cracked feed lips, no matter how small, will cause misfeeds and destroy the stock plastic hop up chamber.
- Magazines are hard to load.
- Doesn't come with original metal flash hider. I've bought GHKs from other US-based retailers and they've always came with the original flash hiders. This one did not.
- My dustcover kept "unhinging" itself due to the recoil. It may just be mine, but I hope nothing else serious comes up.
- Not Cerakoted like the TM MWS ZET, especially at this price.
