2024 Airsoft Guns Buyers Guide
Welcome to the wonderful world of airsoft! With the plethora of different airsoft guns, tactical gear, and other various accessories, finding the perfect airsoft gear for you may be confusing and troublesome. All of us at Airsoft GI are experienced airsoft players with decades of knowledge that we want to use to help you make these big decisions!
This buyer's guide was made with our personal recommendations and experiences and can be appreciated by players of any experience level. The next sections will inform you what to be looking for when buying your airsoft rifle and what you need to know about operating them.
To make sure you understand some of the terminology and the most used terms in airsoft, we highly recommend that you check out our Airsoft 101!
Airsoft Guns come in a multitude of external styles and colors, but beyond that, they come in a number of functional styles: Electric (AEG), Spring, Gas, and High Pressurized Air (HPA) to be specific. Each will have their pros and cons and are worth researching on your own before making the final decision. To have a better grasp on what's required to run each system, we've listed out a general description for each.
AEGs are typically the easiest to maintain and are the most widely used system in airsoft. These will require the use of a rechargeable battery and charger, as well as your choice of BBs.
Spring-powered airsoft guns are by far the cheapest option as there aren't a ton of internal components moving around or at play. However, spring-powered options require you to manually cock them before every trigger pull and are not the most convenient.
Gas-powered airsoft guns or Gas Blowback (GBB) operated airsoft guns are the most realistic replicas on the airsoft market, offering the user a physical blowback action meant to replicate the real deal. While super cool in its own right, GBBs do require more maintenance than any other system and will also require the use of a propellant called Green Gas for it to function. This, on top of their higher starting cost, makes it difficult to recommend for most beginners.
For the solely performance-minded players: High Pressurized Air systems (HPA) are unmatched. The system's use of a regulator means the user has significantly more control over the performance output of the airsoft gun. Most experienced players will tell you just how much the HPA system changes the game. However, HPA is by far the most expensive system in airsoft, as its start-up cost begins at around the $700 mark, and many HPA airsoft guns need to be built out, requiring know-how many newbies do not have. While some pre-built HPA systems are available, they still require the purchase of a tank, regulator, and a line.
Electric Airsoft Guns, or more commonly "AEGs," are a must-have for any airsofter that wants to play against other players. We highly recommend that everyone starts with an AEG for their first airsoft gun as they are the easiest to maintain. AEGs use an external rechargeable battery as its power source, and while available separately, many affordably priced options come included with both the battery and compatible charger. Many modern AEGs may also come included with a pre-installed ETU or Mosfet as opposed to your standard trigger contacts. This “upgrade” allows the user to run higher voltage batteries safely without harm to the gearbox. Some ETUs/Mosfets even offer more features such as alternative fire modes, trigger sensitivity, and more! The best part, however, is these are all optional and do not complicate the overall function of the airsoft gun, just in case you’re the type of player who likes to keep things simple and easy!
The entire Gen2 lineup offers a ton of value, offering many features that were nonexistent for models of a similar price and have essentially helped set the modern AEG standards. Tightbore inner barrel, rotary Hop-Up, and a true QC spring system can all be found in the Gen2s, and many will come included with both the required battery and charger right out of the box!
For simplicity, reliability, and ease of upgrading, the Gen 2s are a no-brainer!
The next offering on the list has to be the LWT MK-1 CQB AEG from Arcturus. A fairly newer brand, Arcturus only recently began offering more affordable options, and they offer a ton of value as well. Not only will many include the same features as the Lancer Gen 2s, but they will include a pre-installed microswitch trigger and a 6.02mm tightbore inner barrel! Arcturus is also well known for their quality assembly and construction of their gearboxes, almost never needing any form of upgrades! This not only applies to the LWT but to all Arcturus Model AEGs!
The Lancer Tactical LT-32 Gen 3 includes a Quick Change Spring System, Full Metal Rack Piston, 6.03mm Tight Bore Inner Barrel, Rotary Hop Up Unit, High-Speed Motor, and the Zion Arms Nebula MOSFET. Combining all of this in their lightweight and durable polymer receiver.
We recommend the Lancer Tactical LT-32 Gen 3 because it takes everything great about the Gen 2 line and cranks it up to 11! With the new High-Speed Motor and the Zion Arms Nebula MOSFET, you get performance that you would normally see in high-end airsoft guns or custom-built airsoft guns!
The KWA KO series is greatly underappreciated. All of the KO: EVE models, including this one, feature the 2.5 AEG gearbox. This gives you the adjustable FPS desired to take your airsoft gun to any field. The lightweight original polymer design keeps weight down while still having the heart of KWA's high-performing and reliable internals.
KWAs are known for their ruggedness, and for their first try at an original modern design polymer AEG, they did a bang-up job!
G&G has been a mainstay in the airsoft scene for decades, and for good reason. The SGR 556 is a testament to their quality, being one of the most highly engineered and well thought-out designs ever put out into the market!
With tech like laser sensors for BB detection and easy-to-access hop, it's no wonder G&G has been around for so long and is so revered even to this day!
Pushing through with continuing to innovate and advance, Lancer Tactical came out swinging once again with their new Gen 4 lineup of AEGs! All the same features you loved from the Gen 3 models are here once again or have been expanded upon. The original Nebula ETU included in the Gen 3s have been replaced with the new Nebula II, giving the user far more features and control over their gearbox! And if it still weren't enough, other versions of the Gen 4 exist with a Gate Aster ETU instead! The Gen 4s are essentially your gateway into the realm of high-end without breaking the bank and offer a ton of potential!
Zion Arms, like Arcturus, is a fairly newer brand to hit the airsoft scene but already has made a name for themselves synonymous with quality craftsmanship. While the original R15s are legendary and offer top-tier performance, the MK2s take it to the next level with the inclusion of their updated ETU, the Nebula II!
Coming included with all the fixings you would expect from a high-end AEG at a more affordable price and in a debatably more aesthetically pleasing receiver!
Specna Arms, much like Lancer Tactical, offers a variety of different lines of AEGs, each to accommodate the budgets of many different types of airsofters. The PRIME series, however, is their latest high-end offering. Each PRIME AEG will include not only a tightbore barrel, rotary hop-up, and QC spring system, but will also include their in-house HAL programmable ETU, a set of 16:1 gears for increased speed, and their brand new "Dark Matter" Brushless motor!
We recommend the PRIME series from Specna Arms to anyone looking for a near-perfect performance AEG right out of the box!
The absolute pinnacle of airsoft technology rolled into one super cool AEG! The Trinity series of AEGs from Arcturus is definitely the most expensive option on this list, but for good reason: It has it all! 13:1 gears, an upgraded motor, and Arcturus' revered gearbox shimming give the Trinity series the definitive rate-of-fire advantage, and the inclusion of a Gate Titan II Mosfet gives the user even more control over the AEG, including the sensitivity of the trigger, alternative fire modes, and so much more: All of which can be adjusted using an app on your smartphone!
For those looking for the absolute peak of current airsoft technology, look towards Arcturus!
While far from the most expensive mention on this list, it earns the top spot for several reasons; chief among them was its design history. The MGC4 project was a collaborative one between Airsoft GI, Lancer Tactical, and the Airsoft Community. We outreached to our viewers and followers of our social media and used direct feedback to craft a series of AEGs that would dominate the competition for a fraction of the cost, and we succeeded!
Using a combination of hand-selected internal components and styled with simple and clean externals, the MGC4 MK2 and MK1 are proper airsoft rifles sporting all the features one would expect from a high-end rifle, such as a full metal construction, clean and stylish MLOK handguard, steel wire-cut gears, tightbore barrel, QC spring system, pre-installed Nebula ETU! Truly an AEG built by airsofters for airsofters!
Stepping up in terms of realism from AEGs are Gas-operated airsoft guns. There are actually several different variants of gas-powered guns: non-blowback and blowback, and even amongst those, there are models powered by Green Gas or CO2. Non-blowback airsoft guns offer a very simple construction as they do not feature an actuating slide or many moving parts and are typically relegated to backyard target shooting. Gas Blowback Airsoft Guns, on the other hand, are the best way to add more fun and realism to your airsoft experience. Also known as "GBBs", Gas Blowback Pistols and Rifles can give you a more realistic experience on and off the airsoft field and are a great training tool commonly used by Law Enforcement agencies and Military Organizations around the world.
As stated previously, even the fuel source can differ, as Gas Airsoft Guns can be powered by either CO2 or Green Gas. Green Gas is much more standardized, as the majority of gas blowback airsoft guns utilize Green Gas, and the fuel itself is comprised of a solution mixed in with silicon oil. This is to assist with lubricating the rubber seals throughout the airsoft gun that can dry over time. CO2, on the other hand, does not contain lubricant but is a higher pressure propellant, meaning it can often cause airsoft guns to shoot harder and stronger. Just bear in mind not all airsoft guns are cross-compatible with the opposite gas, and usage with anything other than the intended gas can lead to issues or breakage.
Below, we've provided an assortment of Gas-Powered Airsoft Guns we'd recommend to any enthusiast hoping to dip their toes in the Gas Airsofter world!

Bolt actions, or more commonly referred to as snipers, are both fun and satisfying to use. They require a bit more patience to master but are well worth the effort. Below is a list of some of our favorite sniper rifles.
The Double Bell VSR-10 is an excellent “clone” of the original Tokyo Marui VSR-10 design but has built upon it and is surprisingly affordable. The amount of aftermarket replacement and upgrade components available is unmatched compared to other bolt-action platforms.
We at Airsoft GI highly recommend this bolt-action rifle for both beginners and players looking for a platform to upgrade.
Another super affordable and reliable sniper rifle would be the JG M70 Bolt Action Sniper Rifle. This rifle is incredibly lightweight, making it a breeze to carry for longer periods. It too can be fitted with upgrade components and accessories.
Due to the affordable price and potential of the rifle, it earns a solid recommendation from Airsoft GI.
If you’re a fan of FPS games like us, then this rifle should be familiar. The L96 platform is super iconic in the world of FPS and film, and Well has done a great job replicating the rifle.
For fans of games like Counter-Strike or Call Of Duty, we most certainly recommend this Bolt Action Sniper Rifle.
This is an absolute steal, especially for a beginner. This rifle already shoots a much higher FPS out of the box and comes included with both a magnified scope and a bipod—everything you need to start playing like a true sniper!
With its affordable price tag, out-of-the-box performance, and included accessories, how could we at Airsoft GI not recommend this deal?
What we have here is another package deal that couldn’t be ignored. The M24 from Lancer is very upgradable, taking several of the same VSR-10 components. It too comes included with both a magnified scope and a bipod.
If a player were in the market for a super upgradable platform but also came with some extra goodies right out of the box, this would be our recommendation.
A breakaway from the traditional sniper rifle profile, the Amoeba Striker is a seriously cool bolt action. The most distinct feature of this rifle is its ability to take VSR-10 hop-up buckings and inner barrels while working with AEG springs!
With its unique shape, lightweight design, multiple color options, and ease of finding parts, this is a definite recommendation from the experts at Airsoft GI.
The Action Army T11 is definitely one of the more unique bolt actions we carry. The coolest feature of this rifle, we feel, is its pre-upgraded internals. Even at 430 FPS, the range and accuracy of the rifle are near unmatched! It even functions with VSR-10 magazines, a very convenient feature.
We at Airsoft GI love recommending this rifle to players looking for a “pre-upgraded” sniper that’s ready to be played competitively.
The perfect assassin gun for every sneaky airsofter. The Nemesis Arms is a full metal bolt action that can be easily and quickly disassembled and stored into its included hard case. And at 500 FPS out of the box, you know your target will feel the impact.
Whether you’re a collector of obscure platforms, or larping as a secret assassin performing a hit, this Bolt Action sniper is the recommended tool for the job!
Very few sniper rifles come close to the level of quality and performance that is the Modify M24. This bolt action is completely upgraded and has the range, accuracy, and consistency to prove it. Available in three different colors, this rifle is also aesthetically beautiful and looks good with any loadout.
If you’re in the market for the best performance sniper, we recommend rolling with the Modify M24 any day.
Another nostalgic rifle from the good ol’ days of Counter-Strike, ASG perfectly emulated the Scout Sniper Rifle. This lightweight champ houses some top-of-the-line internal upgrades and sports an integrated bipod right in its body.
This rifle is recommended for collectors of unique weapon platforms and players looking for higher-performing rifles ready to go out of the box.
HPA Airsoft Guns might be the most expensive system on the market, but for a good reason. The level of control and consistency goes unrivaled even to this day. Provided below is a list of three pre-built HPA airsoft guns that only need a tank, regulator, and a line to be fully operational!
Wolverine is a name highly trusted in airsoft and revered for their rugged construction and simplicity. Using a pre-installed Inferno engine, the MTW series is good-to-go right out of the box once paired with a regulator, tank, and line. What's more, since they were designed as a training rifle of sorts, their receiver groups are constructed from only the highest quality materials and can take a severe beating without showing any signs of wear!
Ease of use, near indestructible build quality, and top-tier performance; what's not to love?
E&L absolutely cooked with the T191. Not only is it an HPA rifle, but it can also be used as a CO2 rifle alternatively! That and its unique choice of model to replicate make this a serious pick for the most hardcore of enthusiasts.
This is definitely an option for players looking for something both unique and a cut above the rest in regards to performance!
Combining forces with Gate Enterprises yielded what could be regarded as the pinnacle of airsoft technology: The Trinity Armament series. Never before has there been an HPA rifle with this many features, nor has it been so easy to adjust said features. The Trinity Armament series can be adjusted via the same smartphone app used for Gate AEG MOSFETs, meaning programming can be done on the fly without having to take out the FCU like most HPA guns.
For the players looking to truly step up their HPA game to the bleeding edge, the Trinity Armament series is the way to go!
Now that we've gone over the various airsoft models to look for and what to expect, it's about time we pick up everything else we need to get out and play! This section will highlight the next mandatory items you’ll need to start playing.
BBs are the ammunition of Airsoft, and just like with automobiles, ensuring you're using the right fuel, or in this case, BBs, is essential for optimal performance. Most high-quality airsoft guns, such as the ones we've listed above, can only use BBs with a weight of .20g or higher, so stay clear of BBs with a lower weight or sub-par quality BBs from non-authorized airsoft retailers. Below is a list of some of the best quality BBs we carry, which you can use with your airsoft guns.
0.20G BBs are the minimum weight requirement for Airsoft guns. The Lancer Tactical BBs are polished to perfection, with no seam to hurt your performance.
We at Airsoft GI recommend these BBs as they are incredibly affordable and of the highest quality.
These BBs are a step heavier than 0.20g and differ in terms of performance. With heavier BBs, they are generally more accurate, having a better effective range at the sacrifice of maximum range. These are also extremely high quality and have no damaging seams.
These BBs are highly recommended, especially for Outdoor players looking for quality BBs while still at an affordable price!
Biodegradable BBs are the same 6mm BBs you would ordinarily use; however, they decompose over time in a non-toxic, environmentally friendly way.
Many airsoft events require the use of Bio BBs only, which is why the experts at Airsoft GI recommend these BBs from Elite Force.
Tracer BBs are chemically treated to work in conjunction with Tracer Units, being luminescent when they’re shot from the airsoft gun and appearing as though a laser had been shot.
Indoor players and outdoor players skirmishing at night love using tracer units to help confirm their BB trajectory and because it looks super cool, which is why we recommend using tracer BBs, such as these high-quality 0.25g BBs from Lancer Tactical.
Batteries are what give an electric airsoft gun, or AEG, its power to activate the geartrain and fire a BB. Typically, there are two types: NiMH and LiPo/Li-ion.
NiMH batteries are definitely a bit older, and the voltages can vary, yielding different performance outputs. LiPo/Li-ion batteries are a bit newer to the scene and are considered a slightly higher quality. They also come in different voltages and can affect the performance of the Airsoft AEG. There are several different types of batteries on the market, but this will highlight the ones we strongly recommend.
LiPo batteries are of a much higher quality compared to batteries of old. Its compact size and shape lend themselves well to a variety of platforms, and its mAh is high enough for several hours of play.
Alongside its affordable price, this battery is ideal for most beginners as the voltage is low enough to not put any stress on an AEG's gearbox, a plus for many who don’t upgrade their gearboxes. A definite recommendation from us.
Much like its 7.4v counterpart above, this LiPo battery is small and compact enough to fit into most battery compartments. However, this battery has a much higher voltage, typically the highest possible for airsoft guns, and will provide a much faster rate of fire and “snappier” trigger response at the cost of higher stress for the gearbox.
We at Airsoft GI recommend this battery for players wanting that higher performance from their AEGs but also recommend upgrading their gearboxes if they’re not already pre-built for the higher stress.
Echo 1 is another brand that makes good quality LiPos. This stick battery is significantly thinner but also much longer. This shape is actually ideal for AK AEGs that house batteries under the dust cover.
Seeing as the AK is one of the most popular weapon platforms in airsoft, second only to the AR, this battery comes highly recommended by the experts at Airsoft GI.
This uniquely shaped LiPo battery has several benefits due to its design. Many battery compartments are located in the stock of the rifle, most of these stocks having a split compartment, so having a battery whose cells are split into different stacks makes storing it a bit easier, especially when you would like to run a higher mAh battery for longer gameplay.
As experienced Airsofters with several years under our belts, we can highly recommend these batteries for anyone looking for a longer-lasting lifespan and to operate with a rifle that has its battery compartment in the stock.
Much like the Echo 1 from earlier on this list, this stick battery is significantly thinner but also much longer. This shape is actually ideal for AK AEGs that house batteries under the dust cover.
Seeing as the AK is one of the most popular weapon platforms in airsoft, second only to the AR, this battery comes highly recommended by the experts at Airsoft GI, especially if you want your AK to have a faster rate of fire and a more responsive trigger.
Some airsoft guns feature a battery compartment towards the front of the rifle, and in the event the provided space isn’t enough for a slightly larger and higher voltage battery, many elect to run a fake/dummy PEQ box. These units are typically hollow and can house a battery of the desired voltage and size.
All of us at Airsoft GI have definitely encountered this situation on more than one occasion, which is why we definitely recommend this battery, especially if you want your “front-wired” AEG to run higher-voltage LiPos.
As mentioned above, some front-wired AEGs do not provide enough space for a higher-performance LiPo, so these batteries were designed to fit within a dummy PEQ or similar external storage unit.
All of us at Airsoft GI have definitely encountered this situation on more than one occasion, which is why we definitely recommend this battery, especially if you want your “front-wired” AEG to run higher-quality LiPos.
In the instance when your battery compartment is incredibly small, smaller-sized batteries such as these are ideal. Even at 600mAh, we’ve personally been able to get several hours of play. And with more and more guns being wired to Deans connectors, this upgrade is already installed for you.
If you were in the market for a PDW (personal defense weapon) or a smaller SMG-style weapon, we cannot recommend this battery highly enough.
LiPo chargers are equally as important as their battery counterparts, as they give the battery its energy needed for use.
LiPo balance chargers, such as this, are a necessity for any airsofter. They individually charge each cell and are designed NOT to overcharge, even when batteries are left plugged in for longer durations.
If you plan on running LiPo batteries at all, this is a definite recommendation from the experts at Airsoft GI. Easy to use, reliable, and affordable!
Alternatively, we also recommend the Lancer Tactical LiPo Charger. This charger will allow you to power up any 2-cell or 3-cell LiPo batteries without having to worry about charging incorrectly. Just like the Tenergy LiPo Charger, all you have to do is plug your battery in and let your batteries charge.
Green gas is the most common propellant used primarily for Gas Blowback pistols and rifles and is a requirement for the models to operate. Many brands put out their line of gas, but below is the Gas we recommend for all your Gas blowback needs.
Puff Dino is regarded as one of the highest-quality gas manufacturers on the market and makes several variants. At 600ml, this can should have plenty of gas needed for several hours of play.
This 600ml can is the best for all-around use with most Gas Blowback models, as it uses high-quality silicone oil in its mixture to help lubricate the seals in the magazine or tank. That, and it’s incredibly affordable for the amount provided.
One of Puff Dino’s green gas variants, this can caters towards players seeking more power from their GBB airsoft guns. Despite having the ability to bump up your airsoft gun’s FPS, this canister still retains good quality silicone oil in its mix for lubrication purposes.
If you’re looking to increase the power of your shots from a gas blowback airsoft gun, this is definitely the number one recommendation we at Airsoft GI can make.
All airsoft guns are required to have the tip (1/4 inch) of the barrel permanently colored in blaze orange. Any person who changes, alters, removes, or obliterates any coloration or markings that are required for by any applicable state or federal law or regulation, for any imitation firearm (replica firearm), or device in any way that makes the imitation firearm (replica firearm) or device look more like a firearm is guilty of violating the state or federal law.
