The Echo 1 M14 SOCOM is a shorter version of the typical M14, and this makes it a short DMR. This weapon is slightly on the heavier side, weighing in at around 7.5 pounds without a battery, mag, or optic, so about 10 pounds after the gun is locked and loaded. After 2-3 games, your shoulders will definitely grow sore from it's weight. The Echo 1 M14 also lacks a lot of needed rail space, but I find that just a simple red dot works well. However, despite being a heavy weapon, this rifle performs like a charm. I've hit targets beyond 200+ feet, and this weapon feeds well with the provided Hi-Cap mag. That, paired with the fact that this rifle has a comfortable grip, and feels strong in your hand, contributes to a good feeling rifle. I recommend using .28g BB's, as I have found that this weight of BB provides the best accuracy, with the longest range. I give this weapon a 4 star rating, because of the lack of rail space, and this M14's weight (which can even be considered a plus, depending on how you look at it). The Echo 1 M14 Is an excellent beginner's/intermediate weapon if you are looking to fulfill a DMR type role for your team. Echo 1 continues to sell affordable, well performing weaponry, and I will continue to buy from them.
Pros:
*Shoots very accurately at 380~390 FPS.
*The range on this rifle reaches out and grabs the unsuspecting personnel.
*Good metal Hi-Cap included magazine.
*Accurate iron sights.
*Comfortable grip and stock.
*1996 SOCOM feel to the weapon.
Cons:
*Not a lot of rail space.
*Oddly short, contributes to a strange, short aesthetic. (Personal preference, I like longer rifles.)
*Polymer body, could be a con or a pro depending on personal preference.
My first entry into airsoft and I'm glad I made this purchase! While the weight will take a bit to get used to I'm quite happy with the out of box experience, but am also glad there's room to grow with upgrades if I choose to go that route.
The only thing I'd recommend echo1 changing about the rifle itself is to either include an above chamber rail, or simply design it with the rail going all the way back to negate the need to install one.
Pros:
-Great performance and accuracy out of the box
-Comes with everything you need bare minimum to get started
-Excellent build quality
-Looks amazing
-Compatible with upgrade parts
-Plenty of room for bigger batteries
-Hop-up is accessible without having to wrack anything or remove the mag
-Iron sights have vertical and horizontal adjustments built in that do not require any tools so you can adjust on the fly!
-With an above chamber rail added on (at least the one I have) the iron sights are still 100% usable negating the need for QD or quickflip scopes etc. if switching between long and short range targets.
Cons:
-Mags are both Hi-caps.
--Would have preferred a mid-cap and a hi-cap, or even just a single mid-cap instead
-Battery charger isn't that great
-I did not receive any manual with mine
-Fairly heavy for a first timer's rifle
-Choosing the right optics for this if you're new can prove challenging
--it's not really good for long range sniping so a large x10 scope seems silly imo
--but smaller scopes will be too far forward to use (even with an above chamber rail installed) effectively or comfortably
--an above chamber rail addon is a definite recommendation for the majority of sights you would buy for this rifle
I bought this back in 2015, but it was a "version 3" and I don't think Echo 1 has changed it.
To summarize, it's the perfect gun for outdoor games and I love it, but I would recommend something else for indoor games.
Pros:
-Looks and feels great.
-The best way to describe the length is "no longer than it needs to be." Long enough barrel for outdoor games but short enough to maneuver around corners. For indoor games, though, you can do better.
-Shoots straight with .25g BBs and the hop-up is adjustable. The max range is at least 150ft.
-Muzzle velocity is underrated. QC tested mine at 380fps w/ .2g and my field tested it at 340fps w/ Elite Force .25g. Check your field's rules regarding muzzle velocity.
-ROF is ~800RPM.
-Mags lock in and feed great.
-Reliable as far as I can tell. I've only taken it to two games, both within a year of when I bought it, and I haven't played since then. But I still have the gun and it still works.
Cons:
-The top rail is too far forward to use a scope unless it allows for long eye relief, and the gun has no rail for a bipod, so it's more of a DMR than a sniper rifle.
-Having a unique gun has pros and cons. It feels unique and cool and people notice it, but you can't always find the accessory you want with an M14 platform AEG. Also, having a version 7 gearbox instead of a typical version 2 or 3 may be a pain for techs.
-Minor complaint, but it has no threaded muzzle.

materials
Is the whole gun made of polymer or metal? It's 7.5 pounds so that's heavy polymer if it is polymer.
